Evaluation so far..

We are coming up to half term and after writing our first draft of our script we realised that maybe we did not have the best story line. We decided to do some more research on short films and see how they have presented the characters and the story line in such a short amount of time and space.
I was inspired by a number of story lines and after thinking long and hard about what to do i thought it would be best if we started to come up with another story idea inspired through another film seeing as this gives us something to work on and we are not starting from scratch.
The problems we were faces with:
- Seeing as our first script we began from scratch our story line was messy and did not complete. For example we wanted the audience to like our character Joe in the end however when we put him on dates we made him out to be a jock. We made such a hated character that we just couldn't think of how the audience would grow to like him, especially in such a short amount of time.
- we are very limited on time. We wanted to make our character change as a person and fall in love with a girl and to find out the girls was dying just in 5 minuets. This would be VERY hard to do.
- After watching a number of short films we realised that they are all very basic and consist on a couple of characters. We wanted a number of locations, a number of actors and we were making the story far to complex.
Once me and my partner agreed on giving writing up a script another go we decided that we are better off basing our film on another film and intrtpreting our own ideas into it. We have now got our new script written up and we are pleased with the progress. Everything is now coming together and we are feeling far more organised. By next week we are going to be able to start filming.
- we created a thoroughly dislikeable character and the audience will not like him. As far as his change of feelings the audience will simply think that he is not to be trusted, therefor will never grow to like him. We were meant to show that he has some redeeming characters and instead his character seemed to be contradicting himself.

What is Longtail?

The Long Tail is a retailing concept describing the niche strategy of selling a large number of unique items in relatively small quantities – usually in addition to selling fewer popular items in large quantities. The concept was popularised by Chris Anderson in an October 2004 Wired magazine article, in which he mentioned Amazon.com and Netflix as examples of businesses applying this strategy. Chris Anderson elaborated the Long Tail concept in his book The Long Tail: Why the Future of Business Is Selling Less of More...

The distribution and inventory costs of business successfully applying this strategy allow them to realize significant profit out of selling small volumes of (har dot find) items to many customers instead of only selling large volumes of a reduced number of popular items.
The total sales of this large number of "non-hit items" is called THE LONG TAIL.
The Long Tail concept has found some ground for application, research, and experimentation. It is a term used in online business, mass media, micro-finance, user-driven innovation, and social network mechanisms (e.g., crowdsourcing, crowdcasting, peer-to-peer), economic models, and marketing (viral marketing).

Here are another 2 posters from a film called 'Shes all that' and 'The Notebook'.
Both romantic stories, Shes all that is about the most popular kid in school made a bet with his friends that he could turn the geek into a girl he would date for the prom but through the journey he has to fight for her and then they end up falling in love! The Notebook is your classic love film witch of course relates to the short film we plan on makeing.

This is a movie trailer/poster for the film 'A walk to remember'. This film is what we have decided to base our short film on. As you can see in this picture the couple are all cute cuddling up close together both looking extremely happy. This picture does not go into detail about the fact that the girl has got an illness or that the girl is a 'geek' and the boy is 'the cool kid'. It shows that pictures can be miss leading.

I have been researching many film posters to start getting an idea for when we have to design ours.

Discription of our main charchter

He's called Joe Jackson and is 19years old. Born September 24th, makeing him one of the eldest in the school year.
He has one younger brother who is 17 years old. However, like a lot of siblings they are complete opposites of eachother. Joe is almost embaressed of his younger brohter.
While Joe is into sports, his apperance, going out and girls his younger brother Edward stays home to play computer games and does not enjoy leaving the house or hanging around with 'friends'. There social lives are a complete contrast. You can tell this just by there apperance (Joe, takes care of himself, dresses to impress and always wants the newest things. Where as Joe, has scruffy long hair, wears glasses and is oftern seen in the same tatty clothes.)

Joe drives a matt black Range Rover with tinted windows and sporty rims. He's a full time student, but promotes clubs on the weekend. His interests are football, sports (soccer), the gym, GIRLS, drinking, clubbing, cars, money, popularity. He's single and has always been popular with the girls, giving him an excure to mess them around and play them off against eachother untill he realised he didnt want to be like that anymore and infact wants to fall in love and have a proper relationship. He wants to go on a number of dates untill he finds his dream girl!
He lives in a 3 bedroom apartment in knightsbridge, next door to Harrods. He only has One flat mate named Sam Garner and the other room was originally taken by his ex girlfriend Sarah , who only lasted a number of weeks.
He no longer lives with his parents seeing as he moved out into his own house at the age 18, when he started university.

Where he was born - In St Johns wood. The Wellington.
He has grown up in London his whole life. But travells very oftern.
Fathers name - Mr Pete Jackson
Mothers name - Mrs Clair Jackson
His father is a lawyer for his own firm and is always in another country travelling for his work.
His mother is a secutary for her husbands lawyer firm, and when she is not at work she is either cooking or cleaning their beautiful house in Sloanne Square. Their business is located in Hype park and is a very well know lawyer firm.
He has longish brown hair, spiked up with gel. Bright blue eyes. Very broad seeing as he spends half of his life in the gym.
Joe normally goes for the stereotypical girl: Tall, slim, Long ,blonde, straightened hair. (cheerleader) Tanned skin and they are always from the popular crowd of girls that everyone is after.

A2 Brief

The OCR brief asks you to produce :

A SHORT film (5 minuets)and two from these three:
- a poster- a radio trailer
- a film magazine review page.

I am working on my film with one person. We have choosen to do a poseter and a film magazine review page.
Origionally we decided on creating a radio trailer but then changed our mind when we realised that a poster/magazine review was probobally a more in depth way of showing off our film as you can go into more detail, show pictures...etc
